William Coleman III – “Situational Awareness of a Pickle”

It would be hilarious if it wasn’t so predictable.

William Coleman III buys a gun but has no idea how to use it. He has no concept of situational awareness and believes, wrongly, that because he carries a gun he will be safe.

He straps on his new handgun and carries it publicly, all perfectly legal in Oregon, and then finds himself at the mercy of an actual criminal.

That criminal puts his own gun in the face of the new gun owner and asks a simple question.

Wanna give me your gun or you wanna die?

With the muzzle of a handgun pointed in his face the man with his open-carry handgun does the only sane thing… he lets the criminal steal his brand new toy.

If you’re going to carry a gun, know how to use it AND be aware of your surroundings.

According to Gresham police, William Coleman III was talking to his cousin near 172nd and Glisan at about 2:10 a.m. on Saturday while openly carrying the gun he had purchased on Friday.

Coleman said a man, about 19- to 23-years-old, approached them, asking for a cigarette. Coleman said the man then inquired about Coleman’s weapon, then pulled a pistol from his own waistband and said, “I like your gun. Give it to me.” Coleman handed over his new handgun and the suspect left on foot.

Coleman described the man as 6-foot-1, clean cut with a small patch of facial hair on his chin and short black wavy hair. He was wearing grey sweatpants, a white t-shirt and flip-flops during the incident.

The stolen gun was a black Walther P22 semi-automatic designed to take 22-long ammunition.

The issue here is not whether carrying a firearm openly is a good or bad idea. The issue here is that if you are going to openly carry a firearm you are obligated to be aware of your surroundings every single second.

It’s called Situational Awareness, and Oregon handgun owner William Coleman III clearly had none.

One commenter on this story described this case perfectly.

Luckily, one idiot is now without his sidearm. Sadly, another idiot now has two.

Bob Owens wrote on BearingArms.com:

Open carry announces to the world that you are armed. That makes you a primary target in almost any conceivable situation, especially if you have the situational awareness of a pickle.

Presumably, the suspect was last seen laughing his butt off at a friend’s crib, as he told them about the look on Mr. Coleman’s face as Coleman handed over his new gun.

I’d suggest that before Mr. Coleman even thinks about purchasing another firearm that he find a reputable shooting school in the Gresham area. He needs to learn not only know how to shoot, but how to carry a firearm concealed, how to select a decent firearm and holster for self-defense, and most importantly, how to stay out of dangerous situations. He set himself up for failure spectacularly, and the results are hardly surprising.

Buying a gun no more means that you know how to use it than buying a car means you know how to drive. Self-defense knowledge is the real weapon in your arsenal. A firearm is merely a tool that allows you to apply that knowledge in worst-case scenarios.

Then of course there are the stupid people, like commenter Mike Lowry, who said:

Wow, what a surprise, a snarky comment. Would you have preferred that the guy shoot the robber? I personally think he made the right decision by handing it over and leaving no dead bodies unnecessarily. Guns should only be fired in order to save lives, not to stop property theft.

Mike Lowry is willing to bet his life that a criminal willing to pull a gun and steal from him won’t be willing to kill him too.

How progressive

Me? I’m unwilling to trust my life to the good intentions of a bad man, whether he just wants my property or not.

Kansas State Rep. Jim Howell Stands With Gun Owners. Sort of…

The mainstream media continues to make a mountain out of a molehill in Kansas, where a new law will take effect July 1 allowing concealed carry permit holders to carry their firearms inside the Kansas Statehouse.

The usual suspects whine incessantly about the dangers of allowing mere citizens to carry firearms but Rep. Jim Howell made it very clear where he stands, and it’s not with the whining ninnies.

“I’m not worried about the guys with concealed carry licenses. I’ve never been worried about them. The ones we need to worry about are the guys who are not licensed, who are concealing their firearm for some reason, and would walk in there apparently with some sinister intent.”

While I disagree that law-abiding American citizens require any form of carry permit (if the Second Amendment was ever obeyed!) if we’re going to pit one American against another it should be the good guys versus the bad guys, not permit holders against non-permit holders.

Howell, like most legislators sadly, only gets it partially correct. He says we need to worry about “the guys who are not licensed, who are concealing their firearm for some reason” and that is garbage.

We need to worry about bad guys with guns, period. It matters not whether they have permission slips from The Almighty State.

It matters whether they have, as Howell correctly says, “some sinister intent.”

Kansas Capitol Police, naturally, are against we mere citizens being armed on “their turf” but that’s just territorial urination. They’ve had free reign until now and there isn’t a bureaucracy on the planet that willingly gives up control. It must be wrested from them inch by stupid inch.

We always felt the building is safe and our concern would be if we had an active shooter, that other law enforcement agencies that might come to the building to help out, they won’t know who the concealed carry people are. If they saw them with a handgun, they mistake them for an active shooter,” Capitol Police spokesperson Officer Steven Crumpler said.

That’s very simple to determine, Officer Crumpler, and this is where the age-old maxim of firearm safety applies.

Make sure of your target and what is beyond.

You never fire a shot until you are positive you have the correct target. If there is an “active shooter” in the building the odds are pretty good it will be obvious to everyone, even law enforcement.

He’ll be the moron shooting all the other people.

The mere fact a person holds a firearm does not mean you shoot. You must be sure of the threat that person poses first. If someone, for example, points their firearm at the moron shooting other people he or she is clearly one of the “good guys” and you leave them alone.

Direct your intentions on the person posing the threat, not the person or persons stopping it.

How’s that for simple?

A Police Chief Defending Citizens’ Right to Self Defense?

Detroit-Police-Chief-James-CraigI’ve written about Detroit Police Chief James Craig before. I could probably write about him weekly and the message would still be missed by those too brain-dead to comprehend Craig’s support of civilian self defense.

James Craig believes each and every one of us has the right to defend ourselves against aggression, even if that means not dialing 9-1-1 until the problem is already solved.

By “problem” I mean the home invader, the attempted rapist, the violent criminal intent on robbing you or worse… should one of we mere citizens shoot a bad guy James Craig will not lose any sleep over it and he doesn’t want the good citizens of Detroit to do so either.

“Coming from California (Craig was on the Los Angeles police force for 28 years), where it takes an act of Congress to get a concealed weapon permit, I got to Maine, where they give out lots of CCWs (carrying concealed weapon permits), and I had a stack of CCW permits I was denying; that was my orientation. I changed my orientation real quick. Maine is one of the safest places in America. Clearly, suspects knew that good Americans were armed.”

Instead of doing what Canada’s RCMP is currently, namely harassing law-abiding gun owners and turning them into criminals and fabricating stories about mass shootings with AK47s, Detroit Police Chief James Craig is doing what police ought to do.

He’s going after actual criminals.

He feels no need to manufacture them out of his law-abiding citizenry, and for that he is to be commended.

Going after the bad guys does come at a cost, of course, which is why the RCMP doesn’t seem very interested in following James Craig’s lead.

Bad guys do stupid things when police get in the way of their “earning” power, and Detroit Police Chief James Craig’s case is no exception. He’s knocked such a hole in Detroit’s drug crime that the dealers want him dead. Literally.

From DetroitNews.com:

The FBI and local police are investigating a threat to kill Police Chief James Craig, the chief said Saturday.

The threat, made over the internet by a man believed to be a drug dealer, was uncovered Friday, Craig said.

“We got information that a dope dealer basically said ‘We need to take the chief out,’” Craig said. “We investigated it, and it was deemed a credible threat. This is the kind of thing that happens in third-world countries.”

Craig believes the man who made the threat is upset because police are costing him money by ramping up the number of drug-house raids they conduct.

“We’re raiding, on average, 35 dope houses a week, and we’ve done five large-scale sweeps, and it’s putting a serious crimp in the dope dealers’ money,” Craig said. “What I take from this is, what we’re doing is working. This guy actually did me a favor, because he let me know we’re making a difference by going after these dope dealers.”

“I want to be there when we get this guy. I want to look him in the eye. You don’t threaten any police officer, let alone the police chief.”

Here in Canada, however, we’re content with turning over 13,000 law-abiding citizens into criminals overnight, all at the whim of some RCMP bureaucrats.

As I’ve said before and will no doubt say again, law-abiding gun owners don’t shoot cops. Real criminals will.

With Concealed Carry Comes Personal Responsibility

A frightening story from Belize reinforces the responsibility we gun owners have when carrying our firearms legally, no matter where we are.

A man was in Brown Sugar Mall, a crowded area called “Tourism Village”, when felt the need to adjust his pants. Perhaps they were too baggy; perhaps his belt was too loose? Whatever the reason this man committed the heinous error of placing a digit inside the trigger guard of his holstered firearm and, as will happen when the trigger of a loaded gun is pulled, a bullet exited the barrel into the floor where it shattered.

bullet_holesBullet fragments hit at least two nearby people, injuring them. While the reporter calls this an “accidental” discharge that is a misnomer. This, like all “accidental” discharges, is a negligent discharge. The firearm holder was negligent. Period. Safe handling of a firearm requires a person be aware of themselves, their surroundings and their firearm AT ALL TIMES.

There are no exceptions.

If a bullet leaves the barrel of my firearm, I am responsible for whatever happens next. Just like every other firearm owner.

From Belize:

There were thousands of tourists today in the area of the Tourism Village when a pair of visitors narrowly escaped grave [injury]; they were wounded by the fragments of a nine millimeter round. The incident occurred inside the Brown Sugar Mall shortly before ten o’clock. A mother and her daughter were reportedly in the vicinity of the San Pedro Belize Express Water Taxi terminal when a firearm, in the possession of a licensed owner, accidentally discharged. The bullet, it is believed, ricocheted and grazed the women. Belize City police were immediately called to the area where they observed the injured persons. According to Superintendent Gualberto Garcia, the women were treated on site and subsequently released.

It is critical to remind ourselves we firearm owners bear responsibility for every bullet that leaves the barrel of our firearm, whether intended or not.

The story does not mention whether there were any legal repercussions for the firearm owner.

Thankfully these instances of negligence are extremely rare and I for one am grateful both these ladies were not harmed more severely.

And I’m sure the owner of this firearm is one heck of a lot more careful as a result of this near tragedy.

God Gets the Blame for Human Depravity and the Mass Murder of Children

Every time some (lone?) madman wades into a crowd and goes on a killing spree — government-staged or otherwise — the Marxist media pundits smugly ask Christian-leaning gun advocates — and there’s a lot of ministers preaching gun ownership from their pulpits and websites such as Chuck Baldwin, Bradlee Dean, James David Manning and others — “How could God possibly allow this to happen?”, as though God had everything to do with the murders that were outside of human control!

Who are these morons the media hires to hide behind the scenes writing questions for these dimwits on the front lines? I swear, I’d be too embarrassed to ask them; I think I’d write my own script.

Humans — not God — were responsible for the killings.

The reason God gave mankind brains before planting the species on Earth was they could think for themselves; so they would know right from wrong.

Mankind is responsible for its own doings; God just comes along and picks up the pieces when a person loses his way and needs help and asks for guidance in how to be a good person and carry out the tenets of the Golden Rule.

After these tragedies occur where does everybody in the community, regardless of religious beliefs, go for solace? The church.

But interviewers the likes of Fox’s Neil Cavuto, CBS’s Jane Clayson and many anti-Christ, anti-gun presstitutes always try to pull a ‘gotcha’ on the interviewees.

girl_praying-173x250How could you possibly like such an evil God?

Sorry, buds, it didn’t work this time with former pastor Michael Huckabee and it didn’t work 11 years ago with evangelist Anne Graham Lotz, daughter of Billy Graham.

I dragged forth the profound words she spoke with CBS’s Jane Clayson shortly after 9-11, I believe it was. And I also believe “God: Food for Thought” (below) may have been brought to my attention by Joe Gingrich.

It is definitely worth another read, which obviously is why I saved it (glad I did; I can’t find it online again); Anne nailed it dead on…but first take a look at Huckabee’s similar present-day responses which shows that the pressitutes just don’t catch on. (I think Huckabee provided an earlier commentary on his own Fox show.)

But what sickens me is all the politicians and bureaucrats yammering about gun-control to the point of eliminating every last gun in the U.S., Canada, Australia, UK and the European countries, as though it’s possible.

Yet nobody in the political, anti-gun arena ever mentions no more government issuing of weapons to 18-year-old youth who serve in the military overseas, killing, killing, killing in foreign countries where innocent babies, children, women, men, elders are rounded up and exterminated or caught in the cross-fire. They are out of sight and thought of back home as valueless “collateral damage”. Wasn’t that the disgusting term coined by Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld and Company? If not coined, he certainly used it liberally.

Our immoral, indecent, body-guarded politicians and gun-grabbers are hypocrites of the first order operating on double standards–if they have any standards at all. And we wonder why the younger generations have morally degenerated when they are using these sleazy adult thugs sitting in high places as their role models.

Huckabee Says Connecticut School Massacre Occurred Because We ‘Removed God From Our Schools’

By Igor Volsky on Dec 14, 2012

Former Arkansas governor and GOP presidential candidate Mike Huckabee attributed today’s deadly massacre in an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut to the lack of God and religion in public schools.

Addressing the tragedy on Fox News, Huckabee dismissed calls for stricter gun control and claimed that future violence can be prevented by solving matters of “the heart” and turning to God:

HUCKABEE: Ultimately, you can take away every gun in America and somebody will use a bomb. When somebody has an intent to do incredible damage, they’re going to find a way to do it… People will want to pass new laws, but unless you change people’s hearts, they’re our transition to the pastor side. This is a heart issue, it’s not something… laws don’t change this kind of thing.

NEIL CAVUTO (HOST): You know, inevitably people ask after tragedies like this, how could God let this happen?

HUCKABEE: “Well, you know, it’s an interesting thing. We ask why there is violence in our schools, but we’ve systematically removed God from our schools.

Should we be so surprised that schools would become a place of carnage because we’ve made it a place where we don’t want to talk about eternity, life, what responsibility means, accountability?

That we’re not just going to have to be accountable to the police, if they catch us. But one day, we will stand before a Holy God in judgment. If we don’t believe that, then we don’t fear that.”

The American Family Association’s Bryan Fischer offered a similar explanation for the tragedy.

Mike Huckabee: Absence of God in Schools May Have Led to Conn. School Shooting

Former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee weighed in on the tragic Connecticut school shooting today in an appearance with Neil Cavuto on Fox News. The former Republican presidential candidate implied that a lack of focus on God in public schools may have played a part in today’s tragedy.

Host Cavuto introduced the topic:

“You know invariably people ask after tragedies like this…How could God let this happen?” asked Cavuto.

Well, you know, it’s an interesting thing,” replied Huckabee. “We ask why there is violence in our schools, but we’ve systematically removed God from our schools. Should we be so surprised that schools would become a place of carnage because we’ve made it a place where we don’t want to talk about eternity, life, what responsibility means, and accountability?” continued Huckabee.

“God wasn’t armed, he didn’t go to the school.”

Huckabee, who was a pastor for 12 years prior to entering the political arena, went on to say that he felt that God would be there to provide “hugs” and “therapy” for the survivors and the victims’ families.

“Maybe we ought to let [God] in on the front end and then we wouldn’t have to call on him, to show up when it’s all ‘said and done’ at the back end,” said Huckabee.

Huckabee is a conservative pro-gun individual so it came as no surprise when the subject matter turned to possible new gun control laws or regulations:

“Ultimately, you can take away every gun in America, and somebody will use a bomb…when somebody has an intent to do incredible damage, they will find a way to do it. People will want to pass new laws, but…this is a heart issue, laws don’t change this kind of thing.”…

God: Food for Thought

In light of the many perversions and jokes we send to one another for a laugh, this is a little different: This is not intended to be a joke, it’s not funny, it’s intended to get you thinking.

Billy Graham’s daughter was interviewed on the CBS Early Show and Jane Clayson asked her “How could God let something like this happen?” (regarding the attacks on Sept. 11).

Anne Graham gave an extremely profound and insightful response. She said

“I believe God is deeply saddened by this, just as we are, but for years we’ve been telling God to get out of our schools, to get out of our government and to get out of our lives. And being the gentleman He is, I believe He has calmly backed out. How can we expect God to give us His blessing and His protection if we demand He leave us alone?”

In light of recent events…terrorists attack, school shootings, etc. I think it started when Madeleine Murray O’Hare (she was murdered, her body found recently) complained she didn’t want prayer in our schools, and we said OK.

Then someone said you better not read the Bible in school … the Bible says thou shalt not kill, thou shalt not steal, and love your neighbour as yourself. And we said OK.

Then Dr. Benjamin Spock said we shouldn’t spank our children when they misbehave because their little personalities would be warped and we might damage their self-esteem (Dr. Spock’s son committed suicide). We said an expert should know what he’s talking about.

And we said OK.

Then someone said teachers and principals better not discipline our children when they misbehave. The school administrators said no faculty member in this school better touch a student when he or she misbehaves because we don’t want any bad publicity, and we surely don’t want to be sued (there’s a big difference between disciplining, touching, beating, smacking, humiliating, kicking, etc.).

And we said OK.

Then someone said, let’s let our daughters have abortions if they want, and they won’t even have to tell their parents.

And we said OK.

Then some wise school board member said, since boys will be boys and they’re going to do it anyway, let’s give our sons all the condoms they want so they can have all the fun they desire, and we won’t have to tell their parents they got them at school.

And we said OK.

Then some of our top elected officials said it doesn’t matter what we do in private as long as we do our jobs. Agreeing with them, we said it doesn’t matter to me what anyone, including the President, does in private as long as I have a job and the economy is good.

Then someone said let’s print magazines with pictures of nude women and call it wholesome, down-to-earth appreciation for the beauty of the female body.

And we said OK.

And then someone else took that appreciation a step further and published pictures of nude children and then further again by making them available on the Internet.

And we said OK, they’re entitled to free speech.

Then the entertainment industry said, let’s make TV shows and movies that promote profanity, violence, and illicit sex. Let’s record music that encourages rape, drugs, murder, suicide, and satanic themes. And we said it’s just entertainment, it has no adverse effect, nobody takes it seriously anyway, so go right ahead.

Now we’re asking ourselves why our children have no conscience, why they don’t know right from wrong, and why it doesn’t bother them to kill strangers, their classmates, and themselves. Probably, if we think about it long and hard enough, we can figure it out.

I think it has a great deal to do with “WE REAP WHAT WE SOW.” Funny how simple it is for people to trash God and then wonder why the world’s going to hell. Funny how we believe what the newspapers say, but question what the Bible says. Funny how you can send ‘jokes’ through e-mail and they spread like wildfire but when you start sending messages regarding the Lord, people think twice about sharing.

Funny how lewd, crude, vulgar and obscene articles pass freely through cyberspace, but public discussion of God is suppressed in the school and workplace.

Are you laughing?

Funny how when you forward this message, you will not send it to many on your address list because you’re not sure what they believe, or what they WILL think of you for sending it. Funny how we can be more worried about what other people think of us than what God thinks of us.

SunTV’s David Menzies – One Class Act

Sun News morning host David Menzies is often considered a comedian with little serious to say.

Monday morning on his “Menzoid Mornings” segment David Menzies proved otherwise with his incredibly thoughtful and classy commentary on the Friday massacre of 20 children and 6 adults at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut.

If Christians do not believe in self-defense, somebody forgot to tell the good folks at South Side Freewill Baptist Church

South Side Freewill Baptist Church is located in the town of Boiling Springs, North Carolina.  It’s a small town of just 4,301 according to the town’s website.

One of the debates that will rage on until the end of time is whether or not the Bible teaches self-defense. Personally I believe it does, but that’s not the point.  It’s not in debate at all for the parishioners of South Side Freewill Baptist Church.

jesse-gates When 38-year-old Jesse Gates kicked in the doors of the church during their Sunday worship service and pointed his shotgun at Reverend Henry Guyton everyone was shocked and terrified.

Aaron Guyton, a concealed weapons permit holder and Reverend Guyton’s grandson, decided that this was the perfect opportunity to put his beliefs on self-defense into action.

Guyton held Gates at gunpoint while fellow parishioners disarmed Jesse Gates and held him until police could arrive. Reverend Guyton was the man who actually plucked the shotgun from Gates’ hands.

Nobody was injured and no shots were fired, a fact that’s consistent with the vast majority of defensive uses of firearms.

Sheriff Chuck Wright made a point of praising Aaron Guyton for having his concealed weapons permit and being willing to use his firearm to defend himself, his fellow parishioners and his grandfather.

“We’re very fortunate we didn’t have gruesome scenes to work there,” Sheriff Chuck Wright said. “I like the fact that a concealed weapons permit holder was prepared to protect the worshippers.”

Wisconsin finally passes Concealed Carry Legislation

It’s not the first time Wisconsin has passed Concealed Carry legislation.  They’ve done that twice before, but this is the first time the Wisconsin Governor is expected to actually sign the legislation into law.  The third time’s a charm, as the saying goes!

On two previous occasions the state legislation and senate passed legislation allowing its citizens to legally carry firearms for self-defense.  Both times then-Governor Jim Doyle vetoed that legislation, and efforts to overturn his veto failed by slim margins.

The tide has turned now though.  Republicans now control both houses of government and the governor’s office, and that’s the difference.  Governor Scott Walker is expected to sign the legislation when it hits his desk.

There are a lot of people opposed to Wisconsin’s concealed carry law of course.

Our National Monument to Women’s Victimhood

Mike Ackermann, Ryan Steacy liked this post

I was going to write something about Gamil Gharbi’s insane killing spree that left fourteen promising young women dead in Montreal back in 1989. But after reading my article from 2008, I really didn’t see what I would say today that I could say any better than I wrote then.

Maybe next year I’ll find a new angle… So until then, for those who haven’t read it before, here is Montreal Massacre: Alternate Endings, originally posted on diarmani.com.

Gamil Gharbi single-handledly changed the face of Canadian gun politics. He became the embodiment of everything that man-hating feminists despise. In their horror and fear they lashed out at every Canadian male, and continue to do so today.

Someone said at the time, “The blood of these fourteen women are on the hands of every man”. Complete and utter garbage, but the national media lapped it up.

But what was the real problem in Montreal that fateful December day? Was it a lack of “gun control”? Not according to the Montreal Coroner Teresa Z. Sourour. She said quite clearly the exact opposite, not that anyone in government or the media noticed.

“The issue of firearms control has intentionally not been addressed. With the unlimited ammunition and time that Marc Lépine (Gamil Gharbi) had available to him, he would probably have been able to achieve similar results even with a conventional hunting weapon, which itself is readily accessible.”

Indeed it wasn’t until 2004, a full fifteen years after the event, that we were finally able to get the government to translate her report into English. (Montreal_Dec_6_1989_Coroners_Report.pdf)

Was it the failure of mental health officials? I doubt it. We did not have “thought police” in 1989 (and thankfully do not today either), and until this event, Mr. Gharbi apparently didn’t exhibit much in the way of abnormal psychology.

Was it the failure of police responding to the scene? Ms. Sourour said yes.

I disagree. Sure, they formed a perimeter and sat outside waiting until Gharbi offed himself, but that is not the root cause of the high death toll.

The failure that day was with our manhood. Or more to the point, our lack of one. For thirty years or more, men had been “trained” to be obedient, to do what they’re told, to be more “feminine”, less “manly”.

So they did exactly what the lunatic with the gun said. They abandoned their sisters to a sure and horrific death.

They left the room.

I pray that the faces of those fourteen dead women haunt every single male who did as Gharbi ordered, every single night for the remainder of their spineless lives. They were there when it counted. They could have saved the lives of their fellow students and they chose not to. Shame on them all. They failed the woman, they failed themselves, and they failed Canada.

Let’s imagine, for a moment, two alternative endings to Montreal on December 6, 1989.

Let’s imagine that a single one of those men had the courage to say “No!”

Imagine if he had gathered his thoughts and his courage, and simply stormed Gharbi. Sure, he might have been shot, even killed. But his actions would have showed clear leadership, and surely one or two other men would have joined the battle. Gharbi would have been taken down in the very first classroom, with perhaps three or four wounded or dead.

That’s a far cry from 14 dead & 29 wounded.

But wait! you say, That’s never going to happen! Who in their right mind is going to confront an armed madman in a school shooting?

Are you sure?

Because there are 7 young men at the Thurston High School in Oregon who are living proof you are wrong.

Yes, the young man leading the counter-attack, Jacob Ryker, was shot multiple times. He didn’t let that stop him. He continued on until the man with the gun was disarmed, and he lived to tell about it. Not only that, he was awarded the highest honour in the Boy Scouts of America for his bravery and leadership. (http://www.nytimes.com/1998/05/23/us/shootings-in-a-schoolhouse-the-hero-wounded-teen-ager-is-called-a-hero.html)

Now let’s look at another scenario, one that seems to disturb so many Canadians today.

Imagine our laws were different.

Imagine that, instead of doing their best to disarm every Canadian, our government believed in our inherent right to defend ourselves. Imagine they had the common sense and the decency to promote lawful concealed carry for any law-abiding citizen that can meet the same proficiency with firearms and use of force training as our police officers.

It’s not that difficult a threshold.

Had there been a single law-abiding citizen with a concealed handgun in Montreal’s l’Ecole Polytechnique that fateful day in 1989, the outcome would have been different. It would have been swift and effective.

Gharbi pulls his rifle out of his duffel bag and points it at someone. He might even get a shot or two off. Then some man or woman with the foresight (and the training) to carry would have stopped him dead.

We wouldn’t be holding candle-light vigils for fourteen dead women, believing that if we just blame enough men for the tragedy, it won’t happen again. The cold, brutal reality is so completely the opposite.

Look at every school shooting in North America and what do they all have in common? “Gun-Free Zones”. Every school has, as its published policy, no legal firearms permitted.

It didn’t help in Columbine. It didn’t help in Tabor. It didn’t help in Virginia Tech. It didn’t help in Dawson College. And it didn’t help in l’Ecole Polytechnique in 1989. Nor will it help the next time some unbalanced individual with a gun goes on a shooting rampage in the next “gun-free zone”.

The time has come to stop pretending we can light a candle to stop the violence. The time has come to focus on solutions that work.

Guaranteeing the death of our young people is not something we should be proud of, yet that is what we do every time we legislate another “gun-free zone”.

The only people who obey the rules are the law-abiding. People like you and me.

We do not walk into a school or a mall and start shooting people.

Yet we are the very people the state demands be defenseless in the face of evil.

It’s time that changed. It’s time our politicians paid attention to us and the real solution we offer.

It’s time concealed carry was made accessible again.

Yes, I said again.

It wasn’t so long ago that concealed carry was a realistic option in Canada, and obtaining a concealed carry permit wasn’t a big deal.

It’s already legal. The law is on the books. Our bureaucrats simply deny every application that doesn’t meet their “criteria”. (read every application)

Let’s tell our elected politicians we want them to take control of the unelected bureaucracy and make concealed carry accessible to ordinary Canadian Citizens.
